Do I have to get a building permit?
[e-Mail this Article]     [Print this Article]

The county does not issue "building permits." The county has Structural Improvement Permits. This is to notify the county that construction is taking place. This is for assessment purposes only.

When the county board passed the ordinance it stated that a fine may be applied if a permit is not obtained. The perrmit does not need to be posted. The township assessor is provided with a copy of the permit.

This does not take the place of any permits that are required by the city or village in which you live. You still must comply with their requirements.

You may pick up a form in the Assessments Office, call to have one mailed, contact your assessor, or many of the town clerks also have the forms available.
