I haven't received my tax bill yet. When will I get it?

If you did not receive your tax bill, please contact the Montgomery County Treasurer's office at 217-532-9521.

When is each installment due?

The first installment is due at least 30 days after the tax bill is mailed. Due dates are printed on each tax bill.

Do you accept postmark?

Yes. To avoid penalty your tax bill must be paid on or before the due date.

Can I pay both installments at once?

Yes. To avoid penalty it should be paid on or before the first installment due date.

What are the different ways that I can pay my bill?

You may pay your taxes at the Montgomery County Treasurer's office located in the Historic Courthouse, first floor, or by mail to PO Box 596, Hillsboro, IL 62049. A deposit slot is located at the front door of the Montgomery County Courthouse at 120 North Main, Hillsboro, IL. Methods of payment are check, cashier's check, money order or cash. Do not mail cash. Failure of the bank to accept your check will void payment of your taxes. you may pay by credit card through Government Payment Service Inc. by phone. Please follow the instructions on the back of your tax bill.

What if I do not receive a bill?

If you do not receive a bill, it is your responsibility to contact the Treasurer's office to get a bill.

What if I receive a bill that is not my responsibility to pay?

If your taxes are paid through escrow (Mortgage Company, Bank, etc.) it is your responsibility to forward the tax bill to your agent. Be sure to keep a copy for your records. Always check to make sure your Lending Institution has paid your taxes. If you no longer own the property please return the tax bill to the Treasurer's office.

When the first installment due date is past, how much do I pay?

If payment is late, Illinois law requires a 1.5% per month, or fraction thereof, interest penalty on each late payment. To avoid interest penalty, your tax bill must be paid on or before the due date designated on the tax bill. Please contact the Montgomery County Treasurer's office for the exact amount due, before making payment.

If I do not pay my taxes by the second installment due date, what happens?

After all payments are posted, a "15-Day Delinquent Notice" will be sent by certified mail for every tax bill not paid. The notice will be printed and mailed approximately 2 weeks after the 2nd due date. There is a $10.00 preparation cost per "Delinquent Notice". The delinquent notice will show the correct amount due for each parcel. Be sure to have your delinquent notice with you when you make payment at the Treasurer's Office or include your copy when you mail payment.

Will you still accept personal checks after the delinquent bills have been sent?

The delinquent notice will give the last day to pay by personal check.

What if I cannot pay my taxes? What will happen to my property?

The Treasurerer's Office is required by law to hold an annual delinquent tax sale. The time and date of the sale are indicated on the delinquent notice. The taxes, not the property, are sold at the annual delinquent tax sale. You are given time to redeem your taxes through the Montgomery County Clerk's Office. Please contact the County Clerk for instructions on how to redeem.

What do I do if I believe my tax bill is incorrect?

Your tax bill is determined by the assessed value of your property, any exemptions that may apply and the tax rate. Questions regarding the assessed value(s) or exemptions should be directed to the Chief County Assessment Office at (217)532-9595. Questions regarding the tax rate should be directed to the Montgomery County Clerk at (217) 532-9530.
